Creator Viewpoint: Comics for Passion, not Profit

Image
guest commentary from ramon gil EDITOR’S NOTE:  I met ramon gil at baltimore comic con several years ago.  his passion for our favorite art form is sincere.  he has written several science-fiction flavored works, and partners with established and noteworthy artists.  He is an established creator of several independent titles, and writes on a regular basis about the creation of independent comics.  visit his website here to learn more . . . .   http://www.ramongil.com/slider/get-scifies-greatest-hits-free/?utm_source=July+2017+Newsletter&utm_campaign=self-publishing&utm_medium=email There has been a lot of talk recently (again) about the lack of income in having a career in comics. The problem is that many creators think of making comics as a business, when it’s really an art form. Yes, art can be a business but I’m not talking so much about the monetizing of it as much as I’m talking about the reasons for doing it. I’d like to suggest that we treat comics, not as a for-prof

New Comic Wednesday Debut: SECRET WEAPONS #1

Image
SECRET WEAPONS #1 (Valiant Entertainment, June 28 release date)  Writer: Eric Heisserer.  Artists: Raul Allen & Patricia Martin.  Letterer: Patricia Martin.        SECRET WEAPONS has received a lot of advance press and promotion, which always makes me a bit skeptical.  Sometimes the work isn’t deserving of the attention. Sometimes the marketing team just needs a book to create some buzz for, picks an average title, and then overdoes it. Readers get let down because expectations were so high.        However, you can usually trust the Valiant team not to screw up a good thing.  And, I can’t blame Valiant for talking up this book - - after all, it’s written by a talented screenwriter (ARRIVAL) who’s earned accolades for his movie scripts. And, he wasn’t coaxed or forced to work on this book - - according to reports he was genuinely impressed by Livewire while working on the script for the HARBINGERS movie, and wanted to develop his ideas for the character  further.

Images From First State Comic Con

Things were hopping at the First State Comic Con today, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mill Creek Fire Hall in Marshallton/Wilmington, Delaware. I arrived shortly after 11:30 a.m. and stayed for a little over two hours. The parking lot was nearly full, and during that time there was a steady flow of traffic into the Con. Saw a lot of familiar faces, including folks from Captain Blue Hen in Newark, DE and The Maroon Hornet in Oxford, PA . . . . . . The first thing participants spotted upon arriving was a replica of the Batmobile (from the 1960's tv show)parked just outside the entrance. I also saw plenty of familiar vendors among the aisles, including Paul's Comics (Captain Blue Hen affiliate), Basement Comics, Frankenstein Comics, and The Comic Book Shop (Wilmington, DE). There were tons of comics and toys everywhere . . . . There were plenty of artists and creators on hand, including PLB Comics from Salisbury, MD, Aspire Comics, Ron Wilson and others - - inclu
