June 2016 PREVIEWS Pre-Order Picks: ONI PRESS
EDITOR’S NOTE: Continuing a new feature, as we peruse the monthly PREVIEWS catalog and highlight some books we feel are worthy of your attention.
Your local comic shop depends on your pre-orders to make sure they have the books you want when you want them. Since business reality makes it impossible for a local comic shop to order some of everything, they depend on the comics readers to tell them what they want to see. It’s a dice roll for them every month. Won’t you help with the odds by at least telling them what you want to buy from them in two months? Please give it a try. We’ll do our best here to help you with those selections, from a BC Refugees point of view. Not objective, but absolutely subjective.

JEFF STEINBERG #1: THE LIFE AFTER was a major accomplishment, so we’re on board for this new title from inventive writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and artist Tony Fleecs
From the catalog: “The double-sized debut issue of the new sic-fi-rom-com-dram-actioner from the writer of THE BUNKER and the artist of MY LITTLE PONY —wait, really? Okay. INVASION! Aliens are real. They’re here, they’re mean, and they’re standing in judgement over the citizens of Earth. Final countdown. Representing humanity (by some fluke) is your boy Jeff Sternberg. Romantically challenged idiot, video store clerk, constipated, confused, distractible. In other words, the planet is totally doomed. Also, robots!"
HEARTTHROB VOLUME 1: We love the variety of titles that ONI puts out. It’s been described as “Bonnie & Clyde Meets Fight Club” and indeed it does combine a love story with some hard crime action. Writer Christopher Sebela. Artist Robert Wilson IV. Get on board here with the first story arc.
From the catalog: “Callie was born with a bad heart. After it ruined her life, she went looking for a miracle: a heart transplant. Now she’s got a brand new heart, but she’s still stuck with a crappy job, crappy boyfriend, and crappy prospects.
Enter Mercer, a mystery man who gets Callie’s heart beating like crazy. As her behavior changes and their flirting deepens, Mercer reveals he’s her heart donor. Only Callie can see, speak to, and touch him — and he’s in love with her, a love she feels just as strongly.
A master thief when he died, Mercer offers to teach Callie his criminal ways and how to turn them against her old job and kick off a nationwide crime spree. Hunted by the FBI and popping heart meds to stay alive, Callie will find out that nothing’s as scary as two people in love with nothing to lose."
LETTER 44 VOLUME 4: If you haven’t been reading this great series, we can catch you up real quick so you can pick up Volume 4 and not be lost. The 44th President of the United States gets a letter from the former POTUS revealing the outer space presence of an alien species and the covert government agencies that monitor them. Writer Charles Soule. Artist Alberto J. Albuquerque.
From the catalog: “Major Gabriel Drum has returned to Earth. Thought long-dead, he brings news of the apocalyptic variety: only 666 people will survive the destruction of Earth, and President Stephen Blades is tasked with choosing them. Meanwhile, the Builders teleport the crew of the Clarke back outside the asteroid belt — everyone but Astra. The crew faces a tough choice — try to get home with their dwindling fuel, or use it in a last-ditch effort to save Astra?"
