June 2016 PREVIEWS pre-order picks: DC COMICS

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Continuing a new feature, as we peruse the monthly PREVIEWS catalog and highlight some books we feel are worthy of your attention.

Your local comic shop depends on your pre-orders to make sure they have the books you want when you want them. Since business reality makes it impossible for a local comic shop to order some of everything, they depend on the comics readers to tell them what they want to see.  It’s a dice roll for them every month.  Won’t you help with the odds by at least telling them what you want to buy from them in two months?  Please give it a try.  We’ll do our best here to help you with those selections, from a BC Refugees point of view.  Not objective, but absolutely subjective.

DC COMICS  page 75+

ALL STAR BATMAN #1:  Among the current writers of the various Batman books, Scott Snyder continues to be one of the best.  Recently breaking up the partnership between Snyder and artist All Star BM JRJR Promo 5731201027cf04 85157544Greg Capullo on BATMAN, Snyder continues to create new Bat-tales, now with John Romita Jr on art, beginning here.

From the catalog:  “My Own Worst Enemy, Part One”.  Superstar writer Scott Synder explodes into an all-new Batman series alongside legendary artist John Romita Jr reimagining some of the Dark Knight’s greatest villains.  First up: Two-Face.  Batman must take Two-Face to a destination out of Gotham City , but the duplicitous villain has a two of spades up his sleeve.  Every assassin, bounty hunter and ordinary citizen with something to hie is on their tails with one goal: kill Batman!  Handcuffed together on the road to hell, this is Batman an Two-Face as you’ve never seen them before."

DEATHSTROKE: REBIRTH #1:  Written by Christopher Priest.  Art by Carlo Pagulayan and Jason Paz.  It’s great to see the return of Christopher Priest to comics. If he even comes close to the dynamic story-telling he employed with his run on BLACK PANTHER for Marvel, this is going to be one hell of a book.  We’re interested in seeing what spin he puts on DC’s assassin and what direction he takes this in.

From the catalog:  “A thousand enemies, a thousand kills — Deathstroke is the world’s greatest assassin.  Stalked by an unseen foe, Slade Wilson is controlled by his own troubled past and challenged to reinvent himself before he loses everything and everyone in his life.  Can Deathstroke be redeemed?  Or will his addiction to violence destroy him?"

DEATHSTROKE #1:  Two doses of Deathstroke this month!  This is one of the titles that DC will be publishing twice monthly.  (Which is only a good thing if the book is worth it.)

From the catalog:  “The Professional, Part One.”  Deahstroke’s latest contract takes him to a war-torn African country where he finds himself aught in the middle of a disintegrating alliance between a ruthless dictator and a deadly super-villain.  With an entire nation at stake, Slade Wilson must choose between fulfilling his contract and saving an old friend."

OTHER DC TITLES TO KEEP AN EYE ON:

We’re watching the Big 3 / Trinity books from DC and recommending them at least through the first story arc.  We realize we’re going out on a limb here, but we are putting some faith into DC’s effort to revitalize their books.  If they can’t do it with these titles, then it’s going to be an uphill battle for them.  (Twice monthly.)

BATMAN #4, #5

SUPERMAN #4, #5

WONDER WOMAN #4, #5

If you’re a Batman fan, then surely you must already have this title on your pull list  . . . .

DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE  #6.

And lastly, in our opinion this is the absolute best of the new Vertigo books . . . . . .

SHERIFF OF BABYLON #9.
