I'm aghast! Horror Comic recognition program is ending.

EDITOR’S NOTES: I’m going to miss the Ghastly Awards. However, as with all fan endeavors, they are a labor of love that often go unrecognized until life/work/family gets in the way and forces some hard decisions and choices. Thanks for Decapitated Dan for his dedication and efforts over the past six years plus. Here from Dan are some final words on the Ghastlys . . . . . . . . . .

The End of the Ghastly Awards

It is with a heavy heart that today I officially announce the end of the Ghastly Awards.  Since 2011 the Ghastly Awards have awarded the Best in Horror Comics with the recognition that they deserved in the Comic Book Industry. We have given out close to 100 Awards in this time.

We announce the end of the Awards due to personal commitments and time constraints. I have asked a lot from the Judges over the past 6 years, and have been rewarded with an amazing commitment to showcasing the genre and the talent in the comic community. A lot of time and effort has gone into the Awards, and it has shown in what we were able to accomplish.

I am sad to leave behind the Ghastly Awards, but I look forward to what life will bring next. Should the right person/party come along to continue the Awards, I will have open ears. Spearheading this effort was well worth it, and I can’t even begin to thank all of those involved, from our Sponsors, those who Submitted their books for consideration, and of course our amazing Judges: Steve Banes, Lonnie Nadler, Mykal Banta,  Pedro Cabezuelo, Belinda “Spaced” McNeill, Bree Ogden, Rachel Deering, Denise Dutton, James Ferguson, Daniel Viney, Phillip Charles, and of course my right hand man, Mike Howlett.

Thank you everyone for submitting your books,  sponsoring the Awards and helping to spread the love of Horror Comics.

- Decapitated Dan Royer

ALTERNA increases print run based on early orders

EDITOR’S NOTE:  I like what this small independent publisher is doing to bring back low-cost comics as well as offer another outlet for creative teams to showcase their work and ideas. They also are developing some programs to help comic shops promote their books. While they didn't have any books ready for Free Comic Book Day, their initial newsprint titles will debut this week on May 3rd, just three days before FCBD. If you're stopping by your local comic shop between now and then, keep a look out for the Alterna books. It won't cost you very much to give them a try. Newsprint is less expensive, so they can sell for less. Here’s an update courtesy of the publisher . . . . .

With a few days to go before the May 3rd debut of Alterna's affordably priced newsprint comics, early order numbers for June's releases are currently blowing away expectations.

Currently at double the amount of May's initial order numbers, Alterna will be increasing print runs for all of June's titles by 50%.  Alterna had increased May's print runs by 25% but an ordering surge still created sell outs across the board.

Publisher Peter Simeti shared his excitement about the early success of the newsprint titles:

"We're less than a week away from debuting our newsprint comics at shops across the world -- needless to say everyone at Alterna is very excited.  Readers and retailers have been super supportive of this initiative and it means so much to the creators here.

It was a pleasant surprise to find out that the initial orders for June were so high, so we'll be increasing print runs to hopefully accommodate all the readers and retailers (and any reorders) without having to go back to press on second printings.  It's been great, receiving messages from customers that they're opening up pull boxes for the first time in years, and that they're buying a reader copy AND a copy to keep safe... for a creator-owned company like us, it's very surreal to hear things like this.

Personally, I hope that readers love the stories and that they'll use the savings on our books to even try other creator-owned books at their local shop.  I'd like to give a big thanks to all the comic shops and readers that are helping us bring back newsprint to new comic book day!"

NEWSPRINT IS GREAT FOR KIDS TOO!

Three of the four books being released on May 3rd are great for kids too.  ADAM WRECK #1, AMAZING AGE #1, and LILITH DARK #1 are fantastic reads for kids -- so pick 'em up on Free Comic Book Day if you don't get a chance to scoop 'em up on the 3rd!

NEWS ABOUT REORDERS FOR MAY RELEASES AT DIAMOND:

Good news for readers and retailers! Due to a small overrun on comic shop/direct sales editions on each book, Alterna will be able to fill reorders via Diamond on May releases.

Story from Strange Horror spins off into Caliber graphic novel

EDITOR’S NOTE:  When last we heard about him, friend of BC and sometimes contributor Gary Scott Beatty just finished a successful Kickstarter campaign to finance the first three issues of STRANGE HORROR. Now, Caliber Comics has picked up Gary’s story “Wounds” for a full treatment. Read on for details and a preview . . . . . .

Wounds asks, "Is Madness a Way to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse?"

A new Caliber Comics graphic novel asks the question, "Is madness a way to survive the zombie apocalypse?"

"Wounds," a 56 page GN now on Amazon and Comixology, is written and illustrated by Gary Scott Beatty, who revealed comic shop owners' humanity in "Number One" and dropped us into 1957 in "Jazz: Midnight."

"I always enjoy stories that force me to pay attention," writes Beatty in the intro to the Free Preview. "The X-Files. Lost. Grant Morrison's 'Invisibles.' Alan Moore's 'Watchmen.' Great classics, sure, but they are missing something: Zombies."

Beatty promises a jarring story with an orbiting space ark and death in a tuxedo. "The whole thing may just be a fever dream by a Black Death sufferer. All will be explained, I promise."

The Free Preview "just scratches the surface" of "Wounds'" plot, said Beatty. It is downloadable at http://strangehorror.com/wounds-free-preview.pdf

"The whole book began with me thinking about how to make comics more exciting. I ended up with this 'eternal waking' style of storytelling that doesn't allow readers time for boredom."

Beatty's book was picked up by Caliber Comics after it ran serialized in three issues of Strange Horror, a digital comic Kickstarted at 142% of goal.

For those who think the zombie genre may have run its course, Beatty promises that "Wounds" "drags the zombie genre, kicking and screaming, into new territory."

Wounds: One man's descent into madness accompanied by death in a tuxedo during the zombie apocalypse, is now on Amazon and Comixology.

"Worlds" throws us into a world where nothing is beyond doubt, except a father's concern for his wife and daughter. Beatty says if you enjoy that "What th-?" factor in graphic novels, you'll enjoy "Wounds."

Biography comic tells story of soccer star Messi

from the official TidalWave press release . . . . .

INTERNATIONAL SOCCER STAR LIONEL MESSI GETS THE COMIC BOOK TREATMENT

Fame: Lionel Messi the comic book is available this week.  It the latest addition to the successful line of TidalWave’s biography titles.

Few footballers are honored to wear the number 10 on their jersey. PelĂ©, Diego Maradona, and now, Lionel Messi have felt the weight of that number, and all have excelled. With five Ballon d’Ors, awarded for meritorious achievement by FIFA, this shy player from Argentina, one of the youngest ever to play the game professionally, proves that to excel, one must know yourself and push yourself to succeed. His storied career is chronicled in this latest illustrated biography

Writer Michael Frizell and artist Angel Bernuy bring Maradona's amazing career to life in comic book form.  With a cover by famed artist Pablo Martinena.

“I found Lionel Messi to be a fascinating figure. This is my second book about a football player – I sport I knew little about until I wrote the Maradona book a few months ago – and it was a challenge to find the proper balance between the myth and the man.” said writer Michael Frizell.

“I’m from Argentina, many people ask me Will they ever make a comic from Messi?, So for me it was a double pleasant surprise, first because Tidal Wave made it true and second because I was chosen for the cover art, it is a tribute to his effort, sacrifice and passion.”  Pablo Martinena

The Fame titles are 28-page issues and bring to life in graphic form the stories of the world¹s biggest celebrities.  In the past TidalWave has produced other sports icons such as David Beckham, Diego Maradona, Alex Rodriguez, Russell Wilson and more.

"We've found a niche with our bio comics," said TidalWave publisher Darren G.  Davis. "Our success with this comic shows that there is a much wider audience for sequential storytelling than many thought. These readers are simply looking for something other than superheroes or horror. With our bio comics, we strive to bring these new readers evenhanded, well-researched looks at some of their favorite celebrities."

It is available Wednesday for your e-reader from iTunes, Kindle, Nook, ComiXology, DriveThru Comics, Google Play, My Digital Comics, Overdrive, Iverse, Biblioboard, Flipkart, ComicBin, Axis360, Blio, Entitle, Comicblender, Kobo and wherever eBooks are sold. Print copies can be ordered exclusively at ComicFleaMarket.com.

Pre-Order Picks: Not too late to add these ALTERNA titles to your list for June 2017

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Want to try out more new titles, but tired of paying $4 or more for something you’re not sure is right for you?  Alterna Press is making this very affordable by launching a slew of new series and mini-series printed on newsprint, which brings production costs down.  Six bucks today only buys two DC comics or 1.5 comics from most other publishers.  That same six bucks will net you all four of these #1 issues.  When the prices get this affordable, how can you not take a chance and check these out.  By the way, Alterna is not a new company so there’s no danger of their folding up the tent and moving on. They have a long track record of publishing — they just happen to be in more of the spotlight now due to their publishing initiative.  Read more below . . . . . . .
