Big Viking Games and Valiant Entertainment Form First Major Content Partnership for Next Generation HTML5 Messenger Gaming Platforms

TORONTO and LONDON, ON – (December 2016) – Big Viking Games, a leader in HTML5 mobile instant games, and Valiant Entertainment, the award-winning comic book publisher with a library of more than 2,000 characters, including X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Harbinger, Shadowman, Archer & Armstrong and more, today announced a five-year mobile content partnership that will convert Valiant’s massive library of characters and stories into mobile instant gaming experiences focused on new gaming platforms such as the recently launched Facebook Messenger.

Starting today, Valiant and Big Viking will combine Valiant’s best-selling collection of superheroes and their associated storylines with Big Viking’s industry leading HTML5 development and publishing ability to deliver the Valiant Universe to fans and new players alike through a completely new medium. The companies intend to release numerous HTML5 titles with a focus on messengers and social networks as distribution.

“It’s an honor to partner with Valiant and bring their incredibly rich and deep catalogue of characters and stories to new and exciting platforms on mobile,” said Albert Lai, CEO and Co-founder of Big Viking Games. “We have always been huge fans of their comics, and the executive team has done an incredible job bringing Valiant to the forefront of the comic world over the years. Valiant and Big Viking share a very similar core ideology, which is to ‘make fans,’ and I believe this partnership will make millions of new fans for both companies”

“Big Viking is poised to enter the market on the cusp of a game-changing moment for the whole of mobile gaming and, together, we look forward to engaging a massive new audience for Valiant’s incredibly rich universe of characters,” said Russell A. Brown, President of Consumer Products, Promotions & Ad Sales for Valiant Entertainment. “Valiant is the most acclaimed publisher of comics in our industry today, and Big Viking has dedicated themselves to translating the essence of our best-known heroes into a groundbreaking new medium. We look forward to presenting our fans, old and new, with some truly amazing experiences to explore on Facebook and beyond in the coming months and years.”

In addition to today’s announcement, Big Viking recently revealed a $21.75 million funding round to continue expansion of their HTML5 mobile instant gaming division and the creation of a $10 million publishing fund to develop and distribute third-party content for messengers in HTML5. Additionally, last year Valiant announced a five-film deal with Sony Pictures to bring both Bloodshot and Harbinger franchises to life on the big screen.

VP of Marketing Dirk Wood To Spearhead Operations, Start New Imprint

San Diego, CA (December 2016) – IDW Publishing is headed to Portland, Oregon! While the company’s main base of operations will remain in San Diego, IDW is officially branching out to the burgeoning comic book scene in Portland, establishing a beachhead for its new phase of development, headed up by VP of Marketing, Dirk Wood.

Wood will serve as Creative Director for Woodworks, a brand new imprint of IDW to be run out of the Portland office. Woodworks will consist primarily of a new line of books, anchored by a high-end, curated magazine, featuring contributions by, and conversations with, the most talented and diverse creators in the industry. While the primary focus will be comics, it will also have a dash of general entertainment and culture features; film, TV, art, music, history, and more. Further details will be unveiled in the coming weeks as this budding line continues to develop.

“This was born from a conversation that Ted Adams and I had,” said Wood, “We were talking about our similar taste in books, and some of the projects we’d like to see happen. This led to talk about the incredible comics scene that’s taking off in Portland, and how we should be a part of it. Suddenly, we realized that these two thoughts fit each other perfectly. To be able to start this new chapter of the company I love, and expand our reach into the hometown that I love, is an incredible opportunity. I can’t wait to get started.”

IDW Publisher and CEO Ted Adams adds, “Dirk and I are both Oregonians -- we even went to the same university in Southern Oregon -- and this new line will represent the independent streak that's part of the DNA of everyone born there. That independence will include not just the books and magazines we make but also in the way we get them into the hands of readers. As everyone who has met him knows, Dirk is a one-of-a-kind talent and I can't wait to get started on this new venture with him.”

In addition to this exciting endeavor, Wood will be staying on with IDW in an advisory role concerning Trade Shows and Marketing, particularly as it relates to the Direct Comic Market.

Born under the oppressive thumb of the Roman Empire, Aric of Dacia learned warfare at an early age. It was amid such violence that he was abducted by an alien race. A high stakes game of cat-and-mouse plays out in dramatic fashion in a highly relevant thriller from Pro Se Productions, Owen Price’s BATTLEGROUND is now available in print and digital formats.

In order to achieve his goal of a sovereign Dixie Nation, fanatical Neo-Confederate dissident Thomas Marshall-megalomaniacal leader of the Southern Liberation Front- has forged an unholy alliance with Islamic radicals as well as various militant secessionist groups from around the globe. This clandestine conglomerate has spent years planning an international campaign of terror that will bring the world to the brink of World War III, thereby destabilizing global politics to the point that myriad governments become vulnerable to a coup-including that of the United States of America. His diabolical plan entering its final phase, Marshall begins to violently purge his organization of lackluster members.

When Bradford County, Tennessee sheriff Craig Connor stumbles upon a pair of dismembered corpses branded with SLF tattoos, he begins to unravel an outlandish conspiracy orchestrated by Marshall and his revolutionary brethren. Joined in the field by rogue FBI agent Michelle Dobson, Sheriff Connor follows a trail of increasingly alarming clues that point toward the SLF committing a brazen act of terrorism upon American soil in the near future. In order to save the lives of thousands of civilians and potentially prevent the country he loves from being torn apart, Connor must find the elusive mastermind Thomas Marshall and put a stop to his outrageous scheme at any cost. In turn, Marshall must stay one step ahead of the surprisingly shrewd lawman and his beautiful, yet mysterious accomplice in order to fulfill his destiny.

Featuring an evocative cover and logo design by Percival Constantine and print formatting by Antonino Lo Iacono and Marzia Marina, BATTLEGROUND STATE is available now at Amazon and Pro Se’s own store at for 15.00.

Comics Review: RED SONJA #0 from Dynamite Entertainment

RED SONJA, VOLUME 4 #0 (Dynamite Entertainment, December 2016 release date)  25 Cents Introductory Priced Issue. Written by Amy Chu.  Illustrated by Carlos Gomez.  Colored by Mohan. Lettered by Simon Bowland. Main Cover Art by Nick Bradshaw with colors by Pete Pantazis.  Rated TEEN +.

RSvol4 00 Cov A Bradshaw

There must be more of Red Sonya’s adventures that have been released through Dynamite Entertainment than any other publisher to date. Unless I viewed the information on the double-page spread incorrectly, there have been 48 trade paperbacks so far completed by various creative teams. That’s an impressive record.

So what to do for Volume 4 to change it up and make it different.  This discount-priced 16-page (plus extras) introductory story sets the stage for where writer Amy Chu will be taking the series  — to present day New York City. This should be interesting.

   BC RATING SYSTEM

STORY: Amy Chu gets things where she needs to, and whets your appetite for more. Sonya behaves and reacts as Sonya behaves and reacts. On a typical mission-for-hire, she runs into a sorcerous foe, and her world changes rapidly. We can’t wait to see what changes trying to exist in the modern world hold in store for our heroine. Change of wardrobe, perhaps? Diet, living conditions, and more? TWO  POINTS.

ART:  Gomez has a clean style that doesn’t clutter the page. His action scenes are good and he’s able to depict the beauty of the main character without turning her into a pin-up model. TWO POINTS

COVER:  Definitely catches your attention. Sonya fighting monsters as they crawl all over a subway train. TWO POINTS

READ AGAIN?  It’s really not necessary. Hopefully, it will lead most readers to Issue #1 to see where this is going.  ZERO POINTS.

RECOMMEND? Of course. At risk is only 25 cents. I recommend this to everybody. It’s a great idea anytime a new team takes over an established property. It entices readers who may have stopped paying attention to the title to give it a second look.   ONE POINT.

TOTAL RATING: 7 POINTS. If you’re a fan of sword and sorcery comics, you’re already in. Others should take a dip.  The water’s warm and the price is right.

Comics Review: MOTRO from Oni Press

MOTRO #1 (Oni Press, November 2016 release date) Written by Ulises Farinas with Erick Freitas.  IllusMotro 1 Covertrated and Lettered by Ulises Farinas.  Colored by Ryan Hill.

MOTRO is a new original heroic epic from the creative imagination of writer/artist Ulises Farinas.  It’s difficult to be certain where this story is headed.  Issue #1 serves as an introductory point, but doesn’t dwell on background detail. In fact, none of the characters in Issue #1 are identified by names. They just appear, and act. Readers will witness a young boy, apparently the main character, who gets embroiled in conflict almost immediately.

In his dreams, his dying father repeats the same message: “save them.”  He awakes in a cave where he’s been sheltered from the snowstorm along with Wheeliebeast, his miniature sentient motorcycle who communicates by images. Apparently, Wheeliebeast is always hungry and wants to eat what the young man eats.  A strange potato-like food called pepper root is introduced, which will play a decisive role later in the story.  They travel to a village overrun by bullies who don’t respect the young boy’s mission and abuse him. However, he (Motro?) has a powerful super-hero like punch, and also knows how to absorb a beating and get back up again. The gang are assisted by intelligent magical tanks called Tankerbeasts, who are also always hungry and must be fed on a regular basis. Strange stuff, indeed.

RCO017 w 1478145789

BC RATING SYSTEM

STORY:  A weird and quirky book, whose secrets we are guessing will take several issues to be revealed. It seems like a coming of age story, although creator Farina has said in interviews that he has a larger purpose in mind, and wants to explore the meaning of masculinity in a violent world as well as philosophical themes.   2 POINTS, mainly for the potential we see here.

ART:  We’ve seen various comparisons (King Conan meets Mad Max, etc.) but we’re not at all certain at this point. How about Conan if illustrated and written by the Adventure Time staff.  We see some similarities in both writing and art style to Geoff Darrow’s SHAOLIN COWBOY, although MOTRO is not as detailed in the art or as absurd in the plot.  It’s also violent like Darrow’s work,  but not as bloody or brutal. Readers will have to chose for themselves, and decide if they love it or hate it. We sorta love it. 2 POINTS

COVER:   The cover lets the reader know what they’re in store for, with a montage of characters and machines from the story.  2 POINTS

READ AGAIN?  Yes.  1 POINT.

RECOMMEND?   To those that like experimental and challenging stories, yes. Others, no.  ONE-HALF POINT.

TOTAL RATING: 7.5 POINTS. There’s definitely a selective audience that would most appreciate MOTRO - - the task ahead is to get their attention.

New Pulp Heroine returns in anthology

FROM THE OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE . . . . .

NEW PULP’S GREATEST HEROINE RETURNS, GUNS BLAZING-
‘THE PULPTRESS VOLUME TWO’ DEBUTS

Raised by Legends… Trained by the Best… Destined to be the World’s Greatest, Truest Hero…The Pulptress returns from Pro Se Productions in a three story collection-THE PULPTRESS VOLUME TWO!

“The Pulptress,” says Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions and creator of The Pulptress, “is near and dear to Pro Se, and to me.  Designed originally as a sort of New Pulp/Pro Se mascot, The Pulptress quickly let everyone know she wouldn’t be denied her time in the bloody action packed spotlight. The three stories in this volume clearly show the diamond like multifaceted aspects of the character and definitely add to the legend the lady in the stripes and domino mask has already built.”

The ultimate Pulp heroine comes out throwing fists, both guns blazing in her second volume of collected stories. Authors Richard Lee Byers, Nancy A. Hansen, and Ethan Nahté take The Pulptress, daughter of the two legendary heroes and a woman reared to be the penultimate fighter for justice, around the world, facing weird, wild, and dangerous evils! Using her mastery of disguise, fighting of all sorts, and the keenest of minds, The Pulptress stands in the trenches between malevolence and the unknowing world. New Pulp’s greatest defender of Justice returns to battle in THE PULPTRESS VOLUME TWO. From Pro Se Productions.

Featuring an explosive cover by Jeffrey Hayes, logo design by Sean E. Ali, and print formatting by Antonino Lo Iacono and Marzia Marina, THE PULPTRESS VOLUME TWO is available now at Amazon and Pro Se’s own store for 10.00.

The ultimate Pulp Heroine’s second anthology is also available as an Ebook, designed and formatted by Lo Iacono and Marina for only $2.99 for the Kindle at and for most digital formats via Smashwords.

The Pulptress’ first full length novel, written by Hancock, will be released from Pro Se in late 2017.

March 2017 releases: DIVINITY III: ESCAPE FROM GULAG 396

From the official Valiant press release . . . . . .

This March, prepare to serve time with the Stalinverse’s newest enemies of the state: Archer & Armstrong!

Valiant is proud to announce DIVINITY III: ESCAPE FROM GULAG 396 #1 – the next can’t-miss one-shot special torn from the pages of the winter’s visionary comics event! On March 15th, join rising star Eliot Rahal (The Paybacks, The Doorman) and acclaimed artist Francis Portela (Faith) as they sentence religious zealot Obadiah Archer and the unkillable libertine called Armstrong to a fate worse than death: A lifetime sentence in Gulag 396, the deadliest prison known to man. But in letting these two subversive criminal offenders into its walls, has this oppressive Gulag condemned Archer and Armstrong...or itself?

In the Soviet-controlled world of the Stalinverse, there is a place where liberty is sentenced to die...and it’s Gulag 396. A maximum-security prison where the only escape is through death, the gulag is the final stop for all enemies and detractors of the world’s oppressive authority. But when public enemy Obadiah Archer is admitted as the latest inmate, could his gospel of goodwill and optimism be the spark that ignites a new faith in the prison’s population...including the immortal undesirable known as Aram Addi-Padda?

On March 15th, be there as Archer and Armstrong challenge Valiant’s violent new reality with a spirit-shaking, standalone tale that will rattle the very soul of the Stalinverse, only in DIVINITY III: ESCAPE FROM GULAG 396 #1 – featuring covers by Adam Gorham (The Violent), Khari Evans (Ninjak), Andres Guinaldo (Nightwing), Ryan Lee (Inhuman) and Kano (Daredevil)!

But first… It all begins on December 21st as the Iron Curtain rises over a once-free world in DIVINITY III: STALINVERSE #1 (of 4) – the FIRST ISSUE of the winter’s major comics event from the visionary creative team of New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt (4001 A.D.), blockbuster artist Trevor Hairsine (X-Men: Deadly Genesis), Harvey Award-nominated inker Ryan Winn (X-O Manowar) and master colorist David Baron (Bloodshot RebornPlanetary)!

At the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union were racing to the stars. But, while America was aiming for the moon, Russia had its eyes on the cosmos. In secret, they launched a three-man mission into the far reaches of space. In the depths, they discovered something Unknown. Something that…changed them. Imbued with god-like powers, the long-lost cosmonauts returned home…only to discover that their old ideology, communism, lost the war to western capitalism in the decades since their journey first began. But now they have the power to change it all…

Earth has a new god. The world you know is gone. Welcome to the Stalinverse, comrade.

Then: The Stalinverse’s subversive spread continues with the first of four essential one-shots torn directly from the pages of DIVINITY III: STALINVERSE #1 (of 4) on December 28th as New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire (Bloodshot RebornDeath of X) and superstar artist Clayton Crain (4001 A.D.) re-assign the KGB’s deadliest covert operative from Mother Russia to the mountains of Colorado in DIVINITY III: KOMANDAR BLOODSHOT #1!

Next, on January 18th, join the cause of Soviet righteousness as Valiant’s leading legend – the unstoppable X-O Manowar – becomes the supreme fighting force of the CCCP in DIVINITY III: ARIC, SON OF THE REVOLUTION #1 from acclaimed writer Joe Harris (SnowfallThe X-Files: Season 10) and Valiant-exclusive superstar David Lafuente (Ultimate Spider-Man)!

Plus, a new kind of hero will rise on February 8th when rising star Scott Bryan Wilson (Batman Annual) and blockbuster artist Robert Gill (Book of Death) summon the Deadside with Shadowman in DIVINITY III: SHADOWMAN & THE BATTLE OF NEW STALINGRAD #1!

IDW adds Figurama Collectors to licensees

Walter Simonson’s Ragnarök will be the first property to get the figure treatment under this new deal

San Diego, CA (December 21, 2016) – IDW is excited to announce that Figurama Collectors Limited has been added to the roster of IDW licensees. Figurama will be producing collectible 1/6 scale Ragnarök figures based on the award-winning comics from Walter SimonsonLaura Martin, and John Workman.

The collectible figures will be distributed worldwide and be made available via specialty and independent stores as well as collectible/novelty E-commerce sites. Concept art of the first figure Ragnarök Thor figure showcases Thor vanquishing his enemies, capturing a breathtaking moment inspired by the comic book.

I couldn’t be more excited to see a Ragnarök Thor in person!” said Walter Simonson. “It’s going to make drawing that guy a whole lot easier!! Two thumbs up!”

“In this concept, we covered all the great elements from across Walter's comic and combined them to give a complete picture about the comic and communicate a full experience,” said Mohammad Shanab, Founder and CEO of Figurama Collectors Ltd. “Our goal was to capture all the elements and details and freeze them in time in order to create a timeless piece while staying as true to the comic as possible.”

Ragnarök has been widely praised as one of the best comics currently running, earning a spot on CBR’s Top 100 Comics of 2015 list as “a master storyteller doing a masterpiece.”

Leading comic book trade site Comics Alliance has given the series its highest recommendation, stating that “Ragnarök is Simonson in top form.”

Fans of Simonson and his latest, greatest creation, can expect the first series of figures to roll out Q3 2017.
