September PREVIEWS Pre-Order Picks: IMAGE and IDW
EDITOR’S NOTES: This is the weekend that pre-orders for November books are due. We’re hoping that you’re reviewing the September issue of Previews (with a copy from your local comics shop, or via the Previews website) and placing your pre-orders with your preferred comics source. It’s the best way to make sure that you get a copy of the books you want to read. It also helps your local comics shop determine what to order so they can manage that ever-growing inventory of books. Not sure what you want to get? We’re a little late making our picks but we’ll make up for that this week. In our usual helpful fashion, we concentrate on debut titles that we feel are worth checking out. We continue our spotlight with three new books from IMAGE and two from IDW . . . . . .
A.D. AFTER DEATH BOOK 1 of 3: Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire working together on a new, imaginative title? That’s a dynamic combination. The premise is captivating: a cure for death is found! We’ve seen the preview pages in Image Comics magazine and this looks to be something special. Prestige Format. Combining comics, prose and illustrations to tell the story. Three oversized books. Written by Snyder. Fully painted by Lemire.
FRONTIER #1: Jonathan Hickman as both writer and artist on a creator-owned title? That’s something new and we want to know more. Space exploration turns out to be not so glamorous as a a prodigal son returns to Earth with news of . . . what?
MAYDAY #1 of 5: There’a a great creative team on this book - - Alex De Campi on script, with art by Blond assisted by Tony Parker. Sex, drugs, violence during the 1971 Cold War. Two Soviets on a mission to California find themselves in a bad way. Sounds irresistible, and the previews hint at a darker, horror element. We have to check this out
BATMAN / TEENAGE MUTANT NIJA TURTLES ADVENTURES #1: The successful cross-over mini-series returns with a new team and a new direction. The art is done in the style of the classic Batman: The Animated Series television show. Villains escape from Arkham and escape to the New York City world of the TMNT’s! Written by Matthew K. Manning with Art by Jon Sommariva.
