December 13, 2013, Mt. Laurel, NJ:  Dynamite proudly announces that the new ongoing MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER comic book series, written by Fred Van Lente (Marvel Zombies) and illustrated by Cory Smith (Fathom), will launch its first issue on Wednesday, March 12, 2014.  MAGNUS:  ROBOT FIGHTER   #1 marks the second highly-anticipated title release in Dynamite's "Gold Key" line of comic books, which also includes TUROK: DINOSAUR HUNTER (debuting in February 2014), SOLAR: MAN OF THE ATOM, and DOCTOR SPEKTOR, a revival of beloved comic book heroes courtesy of Dynamite's new licensing agreement with DreamWorks Classics.

          Fred Van Lente, the New York Times bestselling author at the helm of the newMagnus01-Cov-Fowler-NoDress Magnus series, presents the premise for upcoming series: “Russell Magnus is a seemingly normal guy, a schoolteacher in a small mountain town, who awakens in a vast, far-future megalopolis, NorthAm, where robots have taken over humanity for what they claim in humanity's benefit.  He's known as a ‘Robot Fighter', believed to be a liberator by those who want to throw off the machine yoke, a terrorist to those who likes the status quo the way it is - but really, he's just a guy who wants to get back home, if that's even possible."

          Van Lente is one of the modern comic industry's most prolific writers, celebrated for his work on Marvel Zombies, Deadpool, Archer & Armstrong, The Incredible Hulk, The Mocking Dead, Wolverine: First Class, and more.  He's joined on the MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER series by rising star Cory Smith, whose artistic contributions have included such action-packed fare as Fathom, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Legend of the Shadow Clan.

          MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER #1 will feature a wide selection of cover variants, presented by some of comics' most talented artists.   The main cover will be supplied by Gabriel Hardman (Hulk, Agents of Atlas).  A subscription-only variant cover, intended as a reward for dedicated fans who preorder with their local comic shop retailers, will feature the art of Joe Bennett (Iron Man, Thor).  A blank Authentix  cover will be created, featuring blank white space on the cover perfect for convention artist commissions or the creative whims of the do-it-yourself fan.

         Additional cover artwork by Scott Wegener (Atomic Robo), Tom Fowler (Quantum & Woody), and Ken Haeser (The Living Corpse) will be featured on special Retailer Incentive Covers, rewarded to and available from select retailers that meet certain ordering thresholds through Diamond Comic Distributors.         

        MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' January Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release on March 12, 2014.   Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Magnus #1 with their local comic book retailers.   The Gold Key releases of TUROK: DINOSAUR HUNTER and MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

Robert Kirkman: Invincible, Walking Dead, Wolf-Man

I wasn't actually a huge fan of Robert Kirkman when I first started reading his books.  He was competent, sure, but I didn't see the appeal-- The Irredeemable Ant-Man was a boring side story in the middle of  Civil War and  The Initiative (although I've since changed my mind about this), and his  Ultimate X-Men run was, in many places, a mixed bag (although I did very much enjoy his "Phoenix?" storyline).  And  Marvel Zombies  just seemed like a ridiculous idea--not that I bothered to try it at the time. Now, though?  I've completely reevaluated my opinion on his work, and when his name is attached to a project, I'm far more likely to give it a look.  I don't know if I'd classify him as a master storyteller or a comics icon--but he's very skilled, he has an incredible knack for dialog, and he writes stories that, no matter how ridiculous, seem real .  In a medium where characters frequently violate the rules of physics, that's not alway

What else did I finish reading last month?  Here’s a cross-section of various titles . . . . . . . . . WITCHBLADE #126 “War Of The Witchblade Part 2” by Ron Marz and Stejepan Sejic  (Top Cow/Image) Preface:  Now here’s an interesting concept! = In order to attract new readers to its’ titles Top Cow is giving out free books each month as part of it’s Let Us Win You Over project.  ( www.topcow.com/freecomics )  Every month it’s a different title. And they work through different comics shops each month as well.  In April the title was Witchblade #126 and one of the participating dealers was Captain Blue Hen Comics in Newark, DE (my preferred supplier) so voila! - - - I find a copy in my hands. Since the last time I explored the Witchblade series the mythology has expanded to a battle between the forces of light and dark with each side choosing its agents on Earth, hence the Darkness vs. the Witchblade.  I’m still not overly interested in this type of fare on a regular basis, but

Best descriptive 2013 title: Vampire Vixens of the Wehrmacht

Original Concept: Alex Ronald.  (Parental Advisory, Adult Content)  Limited print run, but digital copies are available from http://www.vampirevixens.co.uk/           If you can’t figure out what this comic is about from that title, then I’m guessing you’ve been living for decades in a cave without a DVD player and no access to cable television.   VAMPIRE VIXENS OF THE WEHRMACHT is a fast-paced horror comic driven by action, rooted in World War II history, and dripping with blood, gore and tantalizing sexual imagery.  What makes it work is a light-hearted approach to the subject matter, all in fun but never silly or stupid.  You may find yourself laughing at several of the scenarios or chuckling at the devilish dialogue.           VAMPIRE VIXENS O
