We'll see. Surprise me, DC!

Like you, I also made a list but I wasn't thinking of a set number. I just noted what books I thought would be most interesting (to me) and it turns out to be nine. Four of them are from your Top 10. I wrote about this earlier and announced my 3 book commitment to all of these titles. (No way can I read all those 52 #1 issues - won't even try.)

They are (in no particular order of anticipation) - - - JUSTICE LEAGUE I'm getting this for the Jim Lee art, regardless. A good story would be a bonus. ACTION COMICS - a new spin on Superman has my interest. AQUAMAN - purely a whim, impulsive of me. BATMAN -- my favorite DC character, and I like Capullo's art. BATMAN AND ROBIN - I'm going a litle bats lately. BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT my art loving instincts kicked in again. BATWOMAN Art. Recognize a trend here? FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE- Could there be a more unlikely title? I have confidence in Jeff Lemire. ANIMAL MAN. Seems like a natural for Lemire. Like to see what he can do with this.

I'd say between my writing about these books, your 10 picks, and what Jeff will comment on - - there should be plenty of opinion to be had on the NEW 52 just from this one blog site. I'm looking forward to it and glad it's happening - - this is the only comics site I visit on a regular basis. Just don't have time for the others - only occasionally.pghheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04489405735995561809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-597330685028834268.post-15823728252797721692011-08-26T13:13:59.435-04:002011-08-26T13:13:59.435-04:00Some of the books you listed almost hit my top ten...Some of the books you listed almost hit my top ten as well--Batgirl and Firestorm based on the strengths of Gail Simone, like I said. Flash, in the hopes that Francis Manapul is able to write at least moderately well to match his spectacular illustrations. Static Shock, based largely on John Rozum's recent Xombi series--Static won't be the same in tone, but Rozum's got chops. I'd be a lot more excited for Justice League Dark if Milligan's Secret Seven miniseries hadn't been one of the worst Flashpoint tie-ins, and even one of the worst superhero books I've read this year.

Yeah, Green Lantern almost doesn't count, does it? There's understandably little change given that the formula is obviously a winning one, but honestly, even if Johns is occasionally predictable, these remain among the best "commercial" superhero books. There's rarely anything particularly innovative, but Green Lantern is a great read month-in and month-out, with occasional forays into true excellence. I'm glad Mahnke is sticking around on art, too.

I'm concerned about the art, too. I respect DC's dedication to make every book on time, but artists have recently had a bit of a return as far as their influence goes, at least at DC, co-writing numerous books and having a significant impact on others (Ethan Van Sciver is nearly as responsible for Green Lantern's success as Johns is, for instance, due to his design work). I think that comics work best when there's an even balance between writer and artist as far as influence on a book goes, and even if the stories are good, artistic consistency could be just as important for this new initiative. Still, if DC has to make a choice, I can't fault them for sticking to their guns.Shanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09526065680698553188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-597330685028834268.post-4174611420267456612011-08-26T09:52:12.544-04:002011-08-26T09:52:12.544-04:00My top 10, in no particular order because I haven&...My top 10, in no particular order because I haven't given it as much thought as you: Action, Batgirl, Firestorm, Stormwatch, Demon Knights, Batman, Batwoman, Static Shock, Justice League Dark, Flash. Wow, that filled up fast. I'm also excited about many other books including All-Star Western, OMAC, Voodoo & Swamp Thing. I expect to continue to enjoy Green Lantern, but I don't really consider it "new" like the rest of the line.

There really isn't anything I'm not excited about, even Hawk & Dove for the reasons you state above. How many #2s I'll buy remains to be seen, of course, but I'm on board to sample all the #1s.

My only concern about the relaunch is that in the effort to be on time, some of the books -- Action, Blackhawks, off the top of my head -- have already solicited 2 or 3 different artists. But that may be an "old school" problem for people like me: it's unknown whether the new audience that DC hopes to attract will care about artistic consistency if they're getting good stories.Jeff Metznerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14999238508906021766noreply@blogger.com
